The Ultimate Beach Day Packing List for Families in Australia

There’s a particular kind of chaos that happens in the hour before a family beach day. Towels are damp from the last time. Someone can’t find their goggles. The sunscreen has leaked into your bag — again.

Sound familiar?

After many beach days of our own (and more than a few soggy car rides home), I’ve put together the ultimate packing list for Australian families heading to the beach. The goal: leave nothing important behind, and come home without the mess.

The Essentials Checklist

Sun protection - SPF 50+ sunscreen - Rashies or UV-protective swimwear for the kids - Wide-brim hats for everyone - Sunglasses (with UV protection) - A beach umbrella or pop-up shade tent.

Swimming gear - Swimmers for everyone (pack a spare set for little ones) - Goggles - Swim fins if your kids are into them - Floaties or swim vest for younger children.

The beach bag basics - Beach towels — one per person minimum (families of four need a BIG bag) - A waterproof wet bag for damp swimmers and sandy clothes after the swim - A medium pouch for your valuables — phone, keys, cards — so they don’t get buried - Reusable water bottles - Snacks (lots of snacks) - A small first aid kit with bandaids and antiseptic.

Comfort & convenience - Beach blanket or mat - Sand toys for little kids - A waterproof phone case or bag clip - Cash or card for the kiosk (we all know there’s always a kiosk) - A spare bag for rubbish.

The Bag Situation: Why Size Actually Matters

The single biggest upgrade you can make to your family beach day is your bag.

Most standard beach bags simply aren’t big enough for a family. You end up with towels stuffed under your arm, a separate bag for snacks, and someone carrying the umbrella like a javelin. It’s not fun.

An extra-large beach bag — genuinely XL, not just “large” — changes everything. My beach bags at Beachy Tones are designed specifically for this: roomy enough for four towels plus all the extras, with a zip closure so nothing falls out when you’re wrangling kids across the sand.

The system that actually works: - One large beach bag for towels, toys, snacks, and gear - One wet bag for damp swimmers and sandy items on the way home (keeps the mess contained) - One medium pouch tucked inside for your phone, keys, and sunscreen so nothing leaks onto your valuables

Quick Tips for Stress-Free Beach Days with Kids

Pack the night before. Always. Trying to pack with tired, excited kids underfoot is a recipe for forgetting things.

Keep a “beach kit” ready to go. Leave your reusable bottles, sunscreen, and hat bag in the same spot between trips. When beach day comes, you’re grabbing and going, not hunting.

Use a wet bag religiously. This is the game-changer for the trip home. Damp swimmers and sandy towels go straight into the wet bag. Your car stays dry. Your other bag stays clean. Life is better.

Freeze a water bottle the night before. It keeps your snacks cool on the way there, then thaws into cold water by the time you need it.

Double-bag the sunscreen. Put it in a small zip-lock bag inside your pouch. Sunscreen that’s leaked into a bag is one of life’s more miserable experiences.
